The Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge is the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States, and includes the longest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere.
Opened on October 19, 2010, the bridge provides a crossing of the Colorado River for U.S. Route 93, linking the states of Nevada and Arizona 1,600 feet (490 m) downstream from the Hoover Dam. It is located approximately 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas.
The bridge is the highest in the nation, at 840 feet (260 m) above the Colorado River. Built as part of the Hoover Dam Bypass Project, which successfully finished within budget at a cost of $240 million, the bridge portion cost $114 million.
The walking path, accessible from the Nevada side of the bridge, is spectacular for viewing and photographing the magnificence of the Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the high walls of Black Canyon. To reach the walking path’s parking area, proceed as if you are driving to the Hoover Dam, not the Bypass Bridge.
Parking is free and there are portable toilets available.
Driving directions from Las Vegas:
